As we continue to discuss the diseases that are likely to affect cows in this rainy season today we take a look at a conditon called grass tetany
Grass tetany is a metabolic disease basically brought about by low magnesium in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid.its mostly affect animal that feed on rapidly growing grass pastures low in magnesium and those high in potassium and nitrogen.signs are sudden since cows dont store magnesium and hence they rely on daily dietary intake.Older lactating cows are more likely to suffer.
lush grass low in magnesium
Fodder fertilised with alot of potasium and nitrogen
- The cow become weak and staggery
- Paddling with the front feet
- heavy breathing and foaming at the mouth.
- Head thrown back
- The cow go down and develop tetanic convulsive fits
- Coma followed by death
For immediate treatment the vet will
Inject a mixture of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous intravenously or
Subcutaneous injection of magnesium sulfate (200 ml of 50% solution) is also recommended.
